Frankfurt. The commercial vehicle market in Germany has developed better than expected a year ago. With estimated 355,000 units and an increase of 5 percent, the volume is at the highest level after the reunification.
VDIK President Reinhard Zirpel: "The international manufacturers participated in this development as much as the German brands. Their market share remains stable at about 27 percent, and in 2016 they have launched around 96,000 new commercial vehicles in Germany."
Both the light and heavy commercial vehicles contribute to the registration result. The light commercial vehicles will reach a record level with around 256,000 units and an increase of 8 percent as in the previous year. The medium-heavy commercial vehicles remain roughly on the figure of the previous year. The heavy commercial vehicles will grow by 5 percent, according to VDIK estimates, with 69,000 new registrations. In a long-term comparison, this is a very good result for this weight class.
Commercial vehicles are driven almost exclusively by diesel engines. But also for commercial vehicles, some changes are under way concerning alternative drives and fuels. Although the number of newly registered pure electric vehicles doubled, the role alternative drive technologies play is still even lower than in passenger cars, their share of newly registered commercial vehicle registrations is one percent. These vehicles can be found almost exclusively among the light commercial vehicles.
VDIK President Reinhard Zirpel: "We believe the strong commercial vehicle market will stabilize at a high level in the coming year. In the medium and long term, VDIK expects the current level of new registrations to remain the same due to the large and increasing transport volumes."
